Fifteen

“I don’t care how long it takes, fallen,” Malcolm said. “You will eventually come clean and tell me everything.” Then, just as abruptly as he had cornered me, he turned and left the room.

Luna stared at me from the doorway, her eyes as wide as saucers. When Malcolm called her name from down the hall, she disappeared.

Cupping my palm to the side of my face, I let his lingering warmth dance across my skin. I turned, stared past the dirty pane of glass to the island beyond the Hudson, then dropped into the chair and waited, tried not to feel too dejected over a kiss that would never happen.

Time ticked by slower than molasses on a freezing day, but I sat patiently, watching the lights of the tower across the river. The water lay still, as if frozen in time, and there had yet to be a hint of the rising sun.

I crossed my legs, then uncrossed them, then crossed them again. I cradled my head in my hand, switching sides often. How long had it been since Malcolm and Luna left me? I stretched out my legs and laid my head back, then sat back up at attention and studied the water. Something was making its way across the river toward the island. A shallow wake lead a trail from a dark moving object to the opposite shore.

I stood and moved closer to the window, my gaze narrowing in on the object. It was clearly a small craft. But whether it was friend or foe, I had no idea. An acid stew boiled in my belly. I steeled my shoulders and marched from the room in search of Roisin.

The hallway was devoid of activity, and each new space I checked, room after room, empty. The building was oddly quiet. Had they all left me here alone to face whatever was coming? Then I caught a whiff of basil, clover, and cinnamon, among other things, and let my nose lead the way. It led me straight toward the grand entry and main hall.

Roisin stood before a room full of witches in something reminiscent of a town hall meeting. Some people raised their hands; others spoke out of turn, but the overall vibe was agitated. I leaned against the doorway, at the far opposite end of the room, and listened.

“More and more keep showing up by the minute,” one woman yelled.

“The entire center is crackling with energy,” another called out.

“The demons have swarmed our streets like a plague of locust!” someone said.

Roisin raised her hands, calming her coven into silence. “These are uncertain times, my friends, but if we stand together, we will see it through to the other side.” From across the room, her gaze found me and narrowed. “We possess the key to change our fate, our circumstances, and nothing shall stop us from bringing it to fruition.”

She turned to Ronan, who stood by her side, and whispered a few quick words. With a slight tilt of the head, Ronan stepped away and disappeared out a side door.
